Putting Genetics to Work

New Britain Palm Oil Ltd

Utilising 40 years of data with Gemview

Gemview has allowed us to answer important questions, including those about performance of the germplasm, or if a particular test/trial has already been conducted and what are the outputs.

New Britain Palm Oil Ltd in Papua New Guinea which produces sustainable palm oil has an extensive breeding program that has utilised Gemview since 2012 to increase the effectiveness their program.
Luc Bonneau, the Head of Research for New Britain Palm Oil says:

“Before Gemview, 40 years of data had been collected but was essentially inaccessible without a great deal of effort to reformat the data. Today, Gemview holds more than 93 million data points for NBPOL, making them readily accessible to all the participants in their breeding efforts in both Papua New Guinea and Indonesia.”

“Often breeding programmes with 25-30 or more years accumulation of data are swamped by out-dated software or excel spreadsheets, which are highly specific, lack flexibility and not so user friendly. As a result, when training up new staff over the course of the breeding programme, the old data is basically being underutilized.”

“Gemview makes it all available through a single click. We have utilized this innovative software to mine/dig through all our data since the first records in early 70’s till now to compile data in a user friendly format. This has allowed us to answer important questions, including those about performance of the germplasm, or if a particular test/trial has already been conducted and what are the outputs.”

“Gemview users can easily screen traits recorded on all breeding trials of the programme through the years and seasons, whether it covers several years or just few months.”
