The Gem platform and the Gemview database portal was conceived by Sue and Mike Carson and Merlin McKenzie in 2001. The software was created as a means to organise and store large volumes of data, and to be able to share breeding data remotely. Gemview went on to fully integrate trial data with pedigree information and breeding values, and to provide an easy way to extensively reformat data for a wide range of analyses aimed at answering important breeding questions. Gemview has proven to be an immense asset that has accelerated testing and selection and increased the amount of genetic improvement obtained in a reduced amount of time and at a reduced cost.
Sue, Mike and Merlin formed Gemnetics in 2005 in order to be able to license Gemview to other interested parties. Today, a range of organisations improving four different species, radiata pine, oil palm, New Zealand manuka and African mahogany use Gemview to enhance their breeding efforts.
We are proud to be New Zealand made and to maintain close relationships with our clients, providing support for accelerating selection and breeding efforts. We are constantly looking to improve Gemnetics products so that they will be even more beneficial to perennial plant breeders.
